Folsom City Ink opened its doors in 2000, founded by tattooist Bill Henderson, better known as “Filthy Bill.” Not long after, my longtime friend George Hernandez joined the crew, and from there, the team just kept growing.
Early on, we brought in an apprentice, Conrad Melancon. He completed his apprenticeship in 2009 and stayed with us until May 2017. These days, Conrad’s on the road, doing guest spots and making a name for himself wherever he lands. He’s the kind of guy who’s an asset to any shop he works with. While he’s mentioned doing future guest spots here at FCI, you can regularly find him with our friends at Orchard City Tattoo in Orangevale, CA.
George tattooed at FCI for ten solid years. He specialized in Traditional Americana and Japanese styles but proved his skills in just about every style of tattooing. George is a beast—one of the best in this rapidly growing industry. These days, he owns Sacred Tiger Tattoo in Davis, CA, and is still one of my closest friends in the business. George, we love you, your family, and everything you bring to the table.
A few years in, we brought on “Big Frank,” a seasoned tattoo artist with a killer taste in music and an endless stream of horror movie recommendations. Frank was with us for seven great years before moving on to new things. We wish him nothing but the best and happiness in whatever’s next. And Frank, if you’re ever down to crack open a Newcastle again, I’m there.
Mike Jupp came to us from Chicago and stuck with us for over four years. The guy’s a machine—tattooing, painting, airbrushing—you name it. On top of that, he’s a classic car fanatic, and you’ll want to check out what he’s cruising around in. These days, Mike’s tattooing at Sacred Tiger Tattoo and Royal Peacock Tattoo.
Over the years, we’ve been lucky enough to host some incredible guest artists, including Schmoe Dawg, RoseBud, Ron Domstead (RIP), Tim Reasons, Shaun Hanna, Frankie Mancuso, Nate Gonzalez, Kenny Ray, Rob Fargo, and Jim Howard. Each one brought something unique to the shop, and we’re grateful for their time with us.
